Melvin Russell Williams, “Bird”, the son of the late Wright Williams & the late Ester Mae Williams was born on March 30, 1957, in Pitt County, and departed this life on March 25, 2022, at his home.

Melvin, known to all as “Bird”, was raised in the Winterville, NC area and at a young age he attended the Corey Chapel Baptist Church. Melvin “Bird” graduated from D.H. Conley High School in 1975, where he played basketball under Coach Marsh. After graduating from Conley, “Bird” attended King College in South Carolina. As an outstanding basketball player, he later traveled to Canada and entered into the Professional Basketball League.


“Bird” quickly made a name for himself and traveled to many other countries in Europe.

He was kind and loving, father, brother, uncle, and granddaddy, with many other hobbies including lawncare maintenance and fishing. His heart’s desire were his children especially his 14 grandchildren, whom he loved and cared for dearly.


He leaves to cherish his memories: one son, Jamarr Antwon Hardy of Greenville NC; four daughters, Charita Janeen Hardy of Greenville NC, Gladys Chanelle Hardy of High Point NC, Jasmine Monae Hardy and Kezia Rochelle Hardy, both of Greensboro NC; three sisters, Vernestine Williams, Willie Pearl Williams and Betty Williams-Streeter all of Winterville NC; one brother, James Williams of Lincoln, NE; two aunts, Mabel Cousar and Claudia Smith both of Winterville NC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on April 2nd, 2022 at Selvia Chapel FWB Church located at 400 Wautaga Avenue Greenville, N.C. 27834. Eulogy by Pastor Bennie Williams of Armor of God Christian Church, Winterville, N.C.


Public viewing will be held on April 1st, 2022 form 5:00 pm until 7:00pm at Mitchell’s Memorial Funeral Funeral Home located at 2423 Wintervillage Dr.
