She attended Pitt County Schools and Graduated from J.H. Rose High School Class of 1993.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work from Shaw University. She was employed by Pitt County Schools for over 17 years. Tonya was a faithful member of Joy Temple Church of Deliverance.

Tonya was preceded in death by her parents: William Thomas Armwood Sr. and Myrtle Atkinson Armwood.

She leaves to cherish her memories her siblings: Bishop Linwood Atkinson(Mildred), Betty Armwood, Teresa Armwood and Louise Harper.

Nieces: Tabitha Walston(Chauncey), Ashley Tommillson(Micah), Jessica Battle Demetrius Sherrod.

Nephews: Corey Armwood, Curtis Atkinson, Bryant Ward(Shameka), Maurice Battle, Christopher Atkinson, Gerald Miller(Tracey) and Jason Atkinson.

Aunts: Gloria Atkinson Jones(David) and Vivian Atkinson.
